DIY Facial with Facial Steamer

I love it when I have stay-at-home spa time. It is so relaxing and having this time to myself really boosts my mood. As a tired mama, I need all the relaxation I can get! I have always had some problems with my skin. Never full-blown acne or anything but I have discoloration, pimple pop-ups, dry patches at times and then oil slicks at others. Finding a skincare routine that truly worked for me has been a bit tricky. It either makes my skin worse or else it does absolutely nothing.

Then I found Curology and let me tell you, it's worth the hype! It really helped clear up my skin and made me feel so much more confident to go makeup-free more often. I have added to my skincare routine as I have gotten older and have learned more about different ways to clean and care for your face. I feel like I have finally gotten my skincare routine down and I don't deviate from it. Ever. You'll read below but I may change up the types of cleansers and moisturizers but the overall routine and order, stays the same!

Step 1: Cleanse Skin

I start by wiping my face first with my Norwex body cloth. I find that it removes my makeup really well, even waterproof mascara. I just wet it with warm water and start removing. I follow that up with a gentle cleanser all over my face. I am working on my fine lines and wrinkles so I love the RoC Daily Resurfacing Discs. They have a smooth side for cleansing and an exfoliating side to remove impurities and deeper dirt.

Step 2: Exfoliate

This next step is one that I don't do every time I do this routine (because of my daily cleansing discs) but I like a deeper exfoliation 1-2 times a week because any more than that really breaks my skin but I love the deep clean feel that I get from exfoliation. The two that I tend to alternate between are the Senegence SeneDerm® Facial Resurfacer and Brandless Grapefruit Facial Scrub. I will warn you that the Brandless scrub is harsher than the Senegence one. If I use this one I only use it once a week. I use a teeny tiny amount and really just concentrate this on my more problem areas (T-Zone) because I don't like to use this all over because of the intensity of the scrub.

Step 3: Steam

No this is my FAVORITE part of my routine! I plug this in beside my bed, lay back and just let the steam take me away and relax me! You can get a steamer for a pretty good price on Amazon (here is the one I use) The steamer helps to open up your pores and helps to loosen up blackheads. **Warning - If you have severe acne or pimples I would not recommend steaming at home. From all the articles that I have read (I researched this A LOT before I started doing it) it can actually make your skin worse or can actually damage it. Also, make sure that your steam isn't too hot. I tend to move my face around while steaming so it's not blasting me at one spot for too long. I steam for about six minutes and then I move on to the next step.

Step 4: Mask and Steam

I have a mask addiction so I have many masks that have different benefits (clarifying, moisturizing, toning, collagen etc). So I just pick out whichever mask I feel like my skin needs and I slap that bad boy on. I continue steaming my face for another 3-4 minutes, turn the steamer off and leave the mask on for the remaining time from the instructions. Make sure you pat into your skin the excess serum from the mask. If I use a bubble mask or a clay mask I don't steam. I just apply the mask and skip the steaming.

Step 5: Acne Treatment

This is where my Curology comes in. I know I said it before but just let me say it again - THIS STUFF IS AMAZING! This has been a game-changer for me. So I apply this all over my face and let it soak in. Now, Curology is a customized skincare company where you fill out a survey about your skin and the problems that you are having, send in photos of your skin and you are hooked up with a personal provider that creates a bottle just for you. You can choose how often you want your bottles to come to you and you can ask your provider any questions that you have and they can help you change up your bottle if you need to. You can try out it for a month for the price of just shipping ($4.95) and then decide if you want to subscribe or not. In this initial order, you get a month supply of the face cleanser, moisturizer, and the customized skincare treatment. I really love Curology and will continuously rave about it because it has truly transformed my skin and it has a really great community of other users that are there to encourage and support you!

Step 6: Tone

I use witch hazel to tone my face. It's inexpensive and it works. Using a cotton pad, just swipe it all over your face and neck. Simple and fast. Toning helps to shrink the pores back since you just opened them all up you want to make sure that you close them so that the good stuff you just put on there can do its magic. I tend to just use the Meijer brand witch hazel but you can use whatever floats your boat. Try this.

Step 7: Moisturizer

The final step is a moisturizer. I like to use a few different ones on my face at night because I have wrinkles that I need to take care of! So I use an eye cream and a serum as well as a moisturizer. All of these products that I am currently using are Senegence products. I really like these products but it's an MLM so I get not wanting to purchase these. Trust me, that's another blog post, but I already have these so I am going to use them up! If you have other suggestions for me to try out please let me know!! But for now, I use EyeCreme, Climate Control, and SeneDerm Night Moisturizers. I start with Climate Control and let that sink in for a few minutes, then apply the EyeCreme. Finally, I add my moisturizer. I put the serum and the moisturizer on my face and neck working in upwards motions. We want to defy gravity!

Optional Step 8: Self-Tanner

Once a week I add a sunless tanner to my routine. I am very pale and I like to have a little bit of color added to my skin. I live in Michigan which is grey a lot of the year and applying a bit of fake tan to my face really helps me deal! I mix Ulta Gradual Tan drops with my moisturizer and apply to my face making sure to rub over my ears and on my neck. Make sure you wash your hands after application or you will end up with the dreaded orange palms. I really enjoy this product because it's a very slight and gradual tan that's not overly like "Whoa! Hello tan!"

Whew...we've come to the end of the post! It was a long one but I truly think that taking care a little time for yourself may be good for your skin but it's also good for your mental health! So turn on some Enya, light some candles and enjoy some you time! Let me know if you have any good skincare products you can recommend.

Until next time! - Sarah
